Ancient Tribes of Uttarakhand

मध्य हिमालयी क्षेत्र में मानव बस्तियों और सामाजिक विकास के इतिहास में विभिन्न पुरा प्रजातियों का आगमन हुआ। इतिहासकारों के अनुसार इनका सही कालक्रम निम्नलिखित है:

In the history of human settlements and social development in the Central Himalayan region, various ancient tribes arrived. According to historians, their correct chronological order is as follows:

 

कोल  > किरात >  खस > भोटान्तिक (शौका)

 

1. कोल प्रजाति / Kol Tribe

  • यह उत्तराखण्ड भूभाग पर निवास करने वाली प्रथम प्राचीन प्रजाति मानी जाती है।
  • It is considered to be the first ancient tribe to inhabit the region of Uttarakhand.
  • साहित्यिक नाम: प्राचीन पौराणिक ग्रंथों में कोल प्रजाति का वर्णन 'मुण्ड' (Mund) या 'शबर' (Shabar) नाम से मिलता है।
  • Literary Name: In ancient mythological texts, the Kol tribe is described by the names 'Mund' or 'Shabar'.
  • शारीरिक संरचना: ऐतिहासिक स्रोतों के अनुसार, इस प्रजाति के लोग दिखने में कुरूप व भद्दे होते थे।
  • Physical Structure: According to historical sources, people of this tribe were considered physically unattractive or rough in appearance.
  • धार्मिक एवं सामाजिक जीवन: ये लोग नाग पूजा के साथ-साथ लिंग पूजा भी करते थे। इनमें 'कुमार-कुमारी प्रथा' का प्रचलन मिलता है, जिस पर भोटान्तिक प्रभाव दिखाई देता है।
  • Religious and Social Life: Along with Snake worship, these people also practiced Linga worship. The practice of 'Kumar-Kumari' was prevalent among them, showing Bhotantik influence.
  • राजनीतिक साक्ष्य: इनके समय नेपाल के कोलीय गणतंत्र के शासन की प्रारंभिक जानकारी मिलती है।
  • Political Evidence: Early information regarding the rule of the Koliya Republic of Nepal is found during their period.
  • इतिहासकारों का मत: प्रसिद्ध इतिहासकार शिवप्रसाद डबराल 'चारण' कोल या मुण्ड जाति को भारत तथा हिमालय क्षेत्र की प्राचीनतम जाति स्वीकार करते हैं।
  • Opinion of Historians: Renowned historian Shiv Prasad Dabral 'Charan' accepts the Kol or Mund tribe as the oldest tribe of India and the Himalayan region.

 

2. किरात प्रजाति / Kirat Tribe

  • कोलों के पश्चात उत्तराखण्ड में किरातों के आधिपत्य की जानकारी मिलती है। इन्हें किन्नर या कीर भी कहा जाता है।
  • After the Kols, information about the dominance of the Kirats in Uttarakhand is found. They are also known as Kinnar or Keer.
  • पौराणिक नाम: स्कन्दपुराण में किरात प्रजाति को 'भिल्ल' (Bhill) कहा गया है।
  • Mythological Name: In Skanda Purana, the Kirat tribe is referred to as 'Bhill'.
  • भाषा एवं आहार: इनकी भाषा या बोली 'मुण्डा' परिवार से संबंधित थी और इनका मुख्य खाद्य पदार्थ 'सत्तू' था।
  • Language and Diet: Their language or dialect belonged to the 'Munda' language family, and their staple food was 'Sattu'.
  • जीवन शैली: किरात मूल रूप से भ्रमणकारी, पशुपालक व आखेटक (शिकारी) जाति थी।
  • Lifestyle: The Kirats were originally a nomadic, pastoral, and hunter-gatherer community.
  • महाभारत में संदर्भ: महाभारत के 'वन पर्व' के अनुसार, किरातों ने अपने नेता शिव के झंडे के नीचे एकत्र होकर अर्जुन से युद्ध किया था। यह युद्ध 'विल्ल्व-केदार' (वर्तमान शिवप्रयाग) नामक स्थान पर हुआ था।
  • Reference in Mahabharata: According to the 'Vana Parva' of Mahabharata, the Kirats gathered under the flag of their leader Shiva and fought against Arjuna. This battle took place at a site called 'Villva-Kedar' (present-day Shivprayag).
  • साहित्यिक साक्ष्य: बाणभट्ट की रचना कादम्बरी तथा कालिदास के रघुवंश महाकाव्य में किरातों के निवास का स्पष्ट वर्णन मिलता है।
  • Literary Evidence: Clear descriptions of the habitation of the Kirats are found in Banabhatta's Kadambari and Kalidasa's epic Raghuvamsha.
  • वर्तमान वंशज: वर्तमान में अस्कोट (पिथौरागढ़) व डिडिहाट नामक स्थानों पर रहने वाली 'राजी' या 'वनरावत' जनजाति को किरातों का वंशज माना जाता है।
  • Present Descendants: Currently, the 'Raji' or 'Vanrawat' tribe residing in places like Askot (Pithoragarh) and Didihat are considered descendants of the Kirats.
  • जॉर्ज ग्रियर्सन का मत: प्रसिद्ध भाषाविद जॉर्ज ग्रियर्सन किरातों को ही हिमालय क्षेत्र की प्राचीनतम जाति मानते हैं।
  • View of George Grierson: Renowned linguist George Grierson considers the Kirats to be the oldest tribe of the Himalayan region.

 

3 खस प्रजाति / Khasa Tribe

  • किरातों के बाद उत्तराखण्ड में खस प्रजाति का प्रभुत्व स्थापित हुआ।
  • After the Kirats, the dominance of the Khasa tribe was established in Uttarakhand.
  • सामाजिक स्थिति: ब्रिटिश काल के दौरान वर्ष 1885 ई० में खसों को शूद्र वर्ग में सम्मिलित किया गया था।
  • Social Status: During the British period in 1885 AD, the Khasas were included in the Shudra category.
  • महाभारत में भूमिका: महाभारत के सभा पर्व के अनुसार, खस जाति के लोगों ने महाभारत के युद्ध में कौरवों की ओर से भाग लिया था।
  • Role in Mahabharata: According to the Sabha Parva of Mahabharata, people of the Khasa tribe participated in the Mahabharata war on the side of the Kauravas.
  • राजनैतिक साक्ष्य: राजशेखर की रचना काव्य मीमांसा के अनुसार, उस समय मध्य हिमालय के कार्तिकेयपुर नगर में 'खसाधिपति' का राज्य था।
  • Political Evidence: According to Rajasekhara's work Kavya Mimamsa, at that time the kingdom of 'Khasadhipati' existed in the city of Kartikeyapur in the Central Himalayas.

 

विशिष्ट सामाजिक प्रथाएँ / Distinct Social Customs:

  • घर जंवाई प्रथा एवं पशुबलि प्रथा: ये दोनों प्रथाएँ खस समाज में अत्यधिक प्रचलित थीं।
  • Ghar Jamai and Animal Sacrifice Customs: Both these customs were highly prevalent in Khasa society.
  • टिकुआ प्रथा: खसों में यदि किसी स्त्री का पति मर जाता था, तो वह विधवा किसी भी पुरुष को अपने घर में रख सकती थी।
  • Tikua Custom: Among the Khasas, if a woman's husband died, the widow could keep any man in her house.
  • झटेला प्रथा: यदि कोई खस स्त्री किसी दूसरे व्यक्ति से शादी करती थी, तो उसके पहले पति से उत्पन्न पुत्र को 'झटेला' कहा जाता था।
  • Jhatela Custom: If a Khasa woman married another man, the son born from her first husband was called 'Jhatela'.
  • देवदासी प्रथा: खस लोग अपनी ज्येष्ठ पुत्री को मन्दिरों में दान कर देते थे।
  • Devadasi Custom: The Khasas used to donate their eldest daughter to temples.
  • धार्मिक प्रभाव: गढ़वाल व कुमाऊँ क्षेत्र में बौद्ध धर्म का सर्वाधिक प्रचार-प्रसार खसों के समय में ही हुआ था।
  • Religious Influence: The maximum propagation of Buddhism in the Garhwal and Kumaon regions occurred during the era of the Khasas.

 

4 भोटान्तिक या शौका प्रजाति / Bhotantik or Shauka Tribe

  • काली नदी की घाटियों में निवास करने वाली भोटिया प्रजाति को स्थानीय रूप से 'शौका' कहा जाता है, जो एक प्रमुख व्यापारिक प्रजाति थी।
  • The Bhotia tribe residing in the valleys of the Kali River is locally called 'Shauka', which was a major trading tribe.
  • तिब्बत व्यापार: शौका लोग पारम्परिक रूप से वर्ष 1962 ई० तक तिब्बत से व्यापार करते थे। इससे पूर्व वर्ष 1914 ई० में तिब्बत व अंग्रेजों के बीच हुए समझौते के आधार पर भोटिया जाति को तिब्बत से व्यापार करने की विशेष छूट प्राप्त हुई थी।
  • Tibet Trade: The Shauka people traditionally traded with Tibet until 1962 AD. Prior to this, based on the 1914 agreement between Tibet and the British, the Bhotia tribe was granted special exemptions for trading with Tibet.
  • प्रमुख उपजातियाँ: भोटान्तिकों की अनेक उपजातियाँ हैं, जैसेगबर्याल, गुंजयाल, मर्तोलिया, टोलिया, पांगती, कुटियाल, दताल आदि।
  • Major Sub-tribes: The Bhotantiks have numerous sub-tribes, such as Gabryal, Gunjyal, Martolia, Tolia, Pangti, Kutiyal, Datal, etc.
  • राठ या संगोत्र व्यवस्था: भोटान्तिकों की उपजातियां 'राठ' या 'संगोत्र' में विभक्त थीं, जिसे वे बिरादरी का सूचक मानते थे। एक ही राठ में आने वाले परिवारों के बीच वैवाहिक संबंध स्थापित नहीं होते थे।
  • Rath or Gotra System: The sub-tribes of Bhotantiks were divided into 'Rath' or 'Sangotra', which they considered an indicator of lineage. Marital relations were not established between families belonging to the same Rath.

 

सांस्कृतिक परंपराएँ / Cultural Traditions:

  • रण-बण प्रथा: दारमा व व्यास घाटी में रहने वाले भोटान्तिकों में इस सामाजिक प्रथा (युवा गृह) का प्रचलन मिलता है।
  • Ran-Ban Custom: Prevalence of this social custom (youth dormitory) is found among the Bhotantiks living in the Darma and Vyas valleys.
  • कुंच: भोटान्तिकों के पूरे समूह को स्थानीय भाषा में 'कुंच' कहा जाता है।
  • Kunch: The entire group of Bhotantiks is called 'Kunch' in the local language.

 

धार्मिक विश्वास (देवता पूजा) / Religious Beliefs (Deity Worship):

  • घूरमा देवता: शौका लोग घूरमा देवता की पूजा 'वर्षा के देवता' के रूप में करते हैं।
  • Ghurma Deity: The Shauka people worship Ghurma deity as the 'God of Rain'.
  • घबला देवता: व्यापारिक उन्नति के लिए घबला देवता की पूजा 'सम्पत्ति व व्यापार के देवता' के रूप में की जाती है।
  • Ghabla Deity: For business prosperity, Ghabla deity is worshipped as the 'God of Wealth and Commerce'.
